Olympic Torch Relay came to Cambridgeshire this weekend

The Olympic Torch Relay came to Cambridgeshire this weekend and was cheered by thousands of people along every step of its journey.

The Olympic Flame arrived in Cambridge on Saturday 7 July where residents lined the streets, climbed on shoulders and hunted out all manner of vantage points to welcome the Torchbearers on their journey through the city. This culminated in 40,000 people seeing Olympic medalist Iwan Thomas lighting the cauldron at Parker's Piece.

On the Sunday, the Olympic Flame began its journey at Trinity College in Cambridge before being punted along the River Cam before leaving the city.

The Flame then travelled to St Ives and Huntingdon where despite the weather many thousands of people lined the route to create a fantastic atmosphere.

Cllr Martin Curtis, Lead member for the Olympics at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “This has been an amazing weekend for Cambridgeshire – we welcomed the Olympic Flame in our tens of thousands and gave it a rousing send off on the Sunday morning. There was a wonderful feeling throughout the weekend with so many happy and smiley faces beaming out from the crowd. None of this could have been achieved if it was not for the huge amount of time and effort of volunteers, local groups, councils and the police. The greatest thanks of all should go to the Cambridgeshire public who turned out in huge numbers with such a fantastic spirit to make the Olympic Flame’s stay in our county a memorable experience for us all.”
