Inspections and enforcement

The Officers in our inspections and enforcement team visit a range of businesses within Cambridgeshire to ensure that they are complying with their legal obligations.

Inspections
If your business receives a visit from an Officer undertaking an inspection, s/he will declare who s/he is and will be carrying authorisation which proves their identity.

During the inspection, the Officer will look at around your premises and will hand you (or person present) a form outlining what has been inspected and what requires attention. If you have any questions about the outcome of the visit, the Officer will be pleased to supply an explanation.

While the Officer is on your premises, it also provides you with an opportunity to ask them any questions you may have on Trading Standards matters.

Powers of the Trading Standards Service
Many of the statutes allocated to the Trading Standards Service give authorised Officers the power to enter premises, take samples and inspect goods or equipment.

If serious breaches of the law are uncovered, there are also powers to seize goods, equipment or documents.

These powers are only used sparingly and where necessary.

Help and advice
If any matter is causing you concern, then you do not need to wait for an inspection, you can contact our service directly and we will give you help and advice.

We would prefer to help you put things right, rather than find things wrong during an inspection or receive complaints about your business.
