Why do Trading Standards recall your Movement Records by post?

Livestock keepers are required by law to keep records of all their livestock movements, births and deaths.  This is to ensure that livestock is both identifiable and traceable. Should there be another animal disease outbreak such as Foot & Mouth, Avian Flu or Swine Vesicular disease it will be vital to know where livestock is located, where it has travelled from or where it has gone to. Your records will hold the answers, so it is important that they are up to date and correct. It is our responsibility to encourage you to ensure that these records are maintained accurately.

One way of doing this would be for us to visit all livestock keepers to check their records, however, having listened to farmers who regularly say that they get too many visits from government agencies, we decided to tackle the task using a different approach.  If records are sent back to us it is unlikely that you will receive a visit from us.  Where we do not receive returns then we will have to make a visit to the farm.

You will see that the books, supplied free of charge by Cambridgeshire County Council, are duplicate so that when you receive a request from us, the blue or green pages can be removed and returned.  We give you a pre-paid envelope in which to return the records.

The postal movement records scheme also recognises that many livestock keepers use other ways of recording the animal movements, such as a computer. If livestock keepers are happy with their own system and that it covers all the required fields then we don’t want to change it. Instead, when you get a request for a copy, you can send a printout or a photocopy back to us. Alternatively you can email the records direct to us.

We hope that all livestock keepers find the books useful and easy to use.  If you have any questions or comments to improve the system then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Veterinary Medicine Records

Records also need to be kept of medicines purchased and administered to livestock, whether by a vet or by yourself. A veterinary medicine record book can be printed off using the link below.
