Fallen stock - new rules on disposal

New rules came into force on July 2003, which made it illegal to bury or burn fallen livestock on farm.

Permitted disposal routes include incineration (in an approved incinerator), rendering, knackers, hunt kennels or zoos.

DEFRA operate a scheme where they will arrange for carcases of over 24 month old cattle to be collected free of charge. Producers must notify the TSE Surveillance Helpline (freephone 0800 525890) within 24 hours of the date of death (or discovery of death) of such a bovine. Failure to notify is an offence under the TSE Regulations.

The National Fallen Stock Collection Scheme was set up in November 2004 as a not for profit means of complying with the Animal By-Products regulations. For more details contact National Fallen Stock Company on 0845 054 8888 or visit their website through the link on the right.

A list of premises able to receive and/or collect fallen livestock in East Anglia is available. Please contact the helpline on 01954 284633 for more information.

The rules also forbid the disposal by burial (including landfill) of any meat product which is no longer fit for human consumption, i.e. out of date meat from a shop.

The burial of pet animals is still permitted. However, horses may only be considered to be pets in certain circumstances. Please contact the helpline on 01954 284633 for information.
