Metrology is the science of weighing and measuring.
The Trading Standards Service used to be known as the 'Weights and Measures' Department, and although our name has changed, this remains an important area of our work.
We deal, not only, with the provision and maintenance of official standards of weights and measures as required by law but also with the equipment used by by businesses that are selling to the public.
The service undertakes inspections of manufacturers and packers, petrol pumps, domestic heating tankers and weighbridges.
As well as this, we also deal with complaints relating to short weight or measure deliveries of potatoes, cheese, fruit, vegetables, meat, beer, wood, petrol, diesel fuel, frozen foods and electric cables.
The principal statute for this area of work is the Weights and Measures Act 1985.
