 Dispensing and storing petrol in containers

Information about approved petroleum containers

 

Petroleum spirit may only be dispensed into approved containers.

Metal containers

(e.g. jerry cans) up to a maximum 23 litre (5 gall) capacity must have:-

· A vapour proof lock
· A securely fitting cap
· Be labelled “Petroleum Spirit - Highly Inflammable”

Plastic containers

Must comply with the Petroleum Spirit (Plastic Containers) Regulations 1982 and must be labelled as follows:-

· Manufacturer’s name
· Nominal capacity in litres (not more than 5 litres)
· The statement: “Complies with SI 1982/630”
· The words “Petrol” and “Highly Inflammable”
· The appropriate hazard warning sign and
  precautions to be taken

OLD OIL CANS, PLASTIC BOTTLES, POLYTHENE CONTAINERS ETC; ARE NOT PERMITTED

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE. THE MAXIMUM PENALTY ON CONVICTION IS A FINE OF £5000
