Stay Safe Card Scheme

Stay Safe Cards have been developed by VoiceAbility’s Adult and Youth parliaments. These are both forums where people with learning disabilities are elected as MPs and speak up for their peer group. They came up with the idea of a Stay Safe card at a forum on safety in the community.

Stay Safe cards are designed to be carried by young people and adults with learning disabilities and can be used if that person feels they need help when they are out, for example - if they feel lost, scared or need advice. The card has already helped a vulnerable person who was missing from home to be identified and assisted.

Each Stay Safe card holds information about the card holder including:

  • Their name
  • Any health concerns
  • Any communications issues
  • Helpful contact details for friends or families

If the cardholder is out and feels lost, scared or needs advice, they can show their card to a member of the general public or go into any building that displays the "Stay Safe" sign, such as information points, shops or a police station.

The details about the person on the card will enable support to be given easily and allows the person to gain help when needed.

Trading Standards and Cambridgeshire Police have been visiting local shops to ask them to support the scheme and display a Stay Safe Card sticker in their shop window.
