Cambridgeshire County Council has a statutory duty to provide a school place for every child living in its area of responsibility who is of school age and whose parents want their child educated in the state-funded sector.
Between 2001 and 2010, a total of 295 new houses were built in St Ives. Existing planning commitments provide for a further 600 houses to be completed between 2011/12 and 2016/17.
In addition, new housing development sites to the west of St Ives are allocated in the Huntingdonshire District Local Plan (Core Strategy) which are expected to result in a further 615 new homes being built between 2016 and 2021.
The 615 additional new homes are expected to generate between 150 and 215 additional primary-aged children. This new growth, together with increasing pressures from the existing population, result in the need for additional primary school places across the town and local area, together with the opportunity to invest in pre-school and the Children’s Centre accommodation.
The Council undertook a public consultation in order to seek the views of parents, staff, school governors and any other interested parties about proposals to:
-
expand the number of places for primary-aged children, by increasing the size of some schools;
-
replace temporary accommodation; and
-
review the location of pre-school and Children’s Centre provision.
On 31 October 2012 the Council issued a statutory notice
to make a prescribed alteration to the following primary schools from 1 September 2013:
-
Thorndown Primary School, Hill Rise, St Ives, PE27 6SE
-
Hemingford Grey Primary School, St Ives Road, Hemingford Grey, PE28 9DU
A copy of the Statutory Notice (14kb) is available here.
A report will be presented at the County Council's Cabinet in due course.
