If your child has a medically diagnosed hearing impairment, they may need additional support to help them achieve their potential at school.
There is a team of specialist teachers and support workers who can work with you and your child as soon as they are identified as being deaf.
Accessing the service
If your child is diagnosed with a significant hearing impairment, your paediatrician, GP or audiologist will refer you to the Hearing Support team to ensure that your child receives specialist help with their education and learning. You can also get in touch, using the contact details on this page.
How we can help
The Sensory Support Service through its Hearing Support team works with hearing impaired children throughout their preschool and school years.
Qualified teachers of the deaf support children with hearing losses which range from mild to profound; most of them will be hearing aid wearers.
They work with children in schools and at home and provide practical advice on all aspects of language and communication.
When your child starts school, they can offer you advice and information to help you make your choice.
They will also discuss with you the level of support your child will need and the range of specialist equipment available.
The teacher of the deaf will also advise the school on how best to work with your child and ensure that they are supported to achieve their potential.
There are two specialist units in local schools which provide more intensive support for pupils with the highest needs. These are at Mayfield Primary School and Cottenham Village College.
