Support for parents and carers

Being a parent is a huge responsibility, and most parents say they need help at some time with bringing up their children.

We aim to make it easy for parents to access support when they need it, without feeling a failure, and without feeling stigmatised.  We want you to get the help you need, because Every Parent Matters.

During our consultations with parents whilst developing our Cambridgeshire Parenting Strategy, parents themselves told us what they felt defined an "effective parent".  Such a parent:

  • is loving, warm, caring and nurturing
  • develops their children's confidence and self esteem
  • communicates clearly and listens actively
  • is consistent
  • gives praise
  • ensures their children understand the consequences of their actions
  • sets a good example
  • is supportive
  • sets clear boundaries
  • uses discipline
  • teaches children to be independent
  • understands that children are individual and may have different needs
  • supports their children's learning and encourages learning through play
  • has fun

We have adopted this as our working definition because it is simple, clear and easy to understand.

Information in this section is organised into:

  • countywide support services
  • area based support services
  • support services to fit the age your your child
  • general support on common parenting issues

and complemented by our section "concerned about" that deals with some things that might cause extra concern.

If you can't find what you want - please let us know so we can provide it.
