What do we mean by disabled ...
We use “disabled” as a broad term to cover children and young people who need extra support, long term or temporarily. This might be because they have:
- a physical disability
- a learning disability
- sight and/or hearing problems
- specific behaviour problems
- some other disability condition needing treatment over a long period.
What Help is There?
Social Care Services. A social worker can assess your child’s needs and work out if they and/or you are entitled to services e.g. respite care breaks, counselling, arranging specialist services. >>>>>>>
Education. Extra support can be provided if it’s agreed that your child has special educational needs. >>>>>>.
Help can also be given if your child has a visual and/or a hearing impairment. >>>>>>>
Connexions. Personal Advisers can help young people (13-25) with additional needs with their personal development including education, training and employment. >>>>>>.
Health. Various health professionals can offer help – paediatricians, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists etc. >>>
Housing. You might be able to get help to change or adapt your home to make it more suitable. >>>
Benefits. You will be entitled to various benefits depending on your particular circumstances. >>>
