Changing personal records after Marriage or Civil Partnership

If you change your name you will need to notify all organisations and government departments that you deal with, so that your personal records can be updated.  Most adults have an average of thirty-five organisations to notify after they change their name.

The New Name Kit, provided by the Name Change Company Ltd., helps you to select organisations you need to notify and produces letters for you to sign, print and post.  Forms are also included to download and complete online.

The New name Kit saves you hours of time and paperwork and makes your name change stress-free.  All you need is access to a PC or laptop with a printer.

Do I have to change my name after marriage  or civil partnership?

There is no legal requirement to change your name, it is purely a personal choice.

A woman can legally take her husband's last name in place of her own last name.  The marriage certificate provides proof of her entitlement to do this.

Name change after a civil partnership

You are entitled to take your civil partner's last name as it appears on the civil partnership certificate and use this in place of your own last name.  Your civil partnership certificate provides proof of your legal entitlement to do this.
