Registrar General's Certificate

This enables a person with short life expectancy to marry or form a civil partnership quickly.

If you believe this situation may apply to your circumstances, it is important that you contact your local registration office as soon as possible.

Before notice can be given a medical certificate must be obtained from a registered medical practitioner to confirm that

  • the Doctor is in medical attendance on the person concerned
  • the person is seriously ill and not expected to recover
  • the person cannot be moved to a place registered for marriages and civil partnerships
  • he or she understands the nature and purport of the ceremony

The notice is given to the Superintendent Registrar in the district in which the marriage or civil partnership is to take place.  No residential qualification is required for either party.  The authority then issued in valid for one month.
