Getting asked for ID

Tired of getting asked for identification (ID) when you buy alcohol or cigarettes?

The harm to young people from drinking and smoking when they are young can damage them for the rest of their lives. As a result we have done a lot of work with shops across the County to make sure that they never sell to people under 18.

If you are 18 and over, being asked for ID every time you want to buy alcohol or cigarettes can be annoying, especially if you don’t have a driving licence card that you can present as ID

But you could apply for a Citizencard or a Validate card. These are widely recognised by retailers as a genuine form of ID, so if you produce it they know they can trust it.

Also, why not produce your ID on the counter each time you buy your alcohol or cigarettes to save the embarrassment of being asked.

Are you being asked to buy alcohol or cigarettes for under 18's?

If you are 18 or over, but get asked to buy alcohol for under 18’s, know the facts.

·         It is illegal.

·         You can be fined up to £5,000.

·         Worse than that, it can damage that young person’s life irreparably
