Reporting rogue traders and criminal activity

If you suspect a trader is committing criminal offences, then please get in touch with us. Although we have Intelligence systems and officers out and about in communities, we rely a great deal on information from the public to alert us to issues.

It might be a rogue trader (someone who deliberately overcharges for unsatisfactory services and/or goods, charges for unnecessary work, damages property deliberately in order to obtain money, or leaves work unfinished and intimidates customers in order to extort money. They usually find their customers by calling at people’s doors), a c ar clocker, someone selling dangerous goods, or perhaps a conman. Whatever your concerns, please get in touch.

You can report your suspicions over the telephone and remain anonymous if you wish. The Citizens Advice Consumer Service is our partner in the delivery of our advice services and they can be contacted on 0845 4040506. Calls should cost no more than 4p per minute for BT customers (other networks will vary and from mobiles may be considerably higher). Minicom users should dial 08451 23 13 84. You are also able to email The Citizens Advice Consumer Service.

Alternatively you can use the ripofftipoff website.

Or, if you would prefer, you are welcome to write to us at:

Trading Standards

Cambridgeshire County Council

PO Box 450

Cambridge City

If you are unsure whether this is a police or Trading Standards issue, generally speaking offences committed in the course of a business are covered Trading Standards, whereas crimes committed by individuals are covered by the police.

For live incidents where the rogue trader is still at the property or is due to return contact the police on 999. The police have a protocol for dealing with these incidents and welcome your contact.
