Our shopping tips

Hints for consumers on how to get best value for money when shopping.

To make sure that you make the most of your money and are not disappointed with your purchases, remember our top tips:

  • Shop around before you buy as prices can vary dramatically between stores.
  • Many people go on long-distance shopping trips - think before you buy. Will you be able to easily return faulty or unsuitable items. Remember that your sales contract is with the shop where you bought the item – you may not be able to return it to another branch - Ask.
  • Always check the stores refund policy before you buy – if you are buying a gift - tell them.  Ask if they will give a refund if it is unwanted or unsuitable? If so, return purchases promptly.
  • Always keep your receipts as proof of purchase - they may be required if your purchases need to be exchanged or refunded.
  • Examine goods as soon as possible after purchase as faults should be reported to the store quickly.
  • Guarantees usually begin on the day you buy the item – if you are buying a gift the store may delay the start of a guarantee – Ask them!
  • Think carefully before buying an extended warranty for electrical goods – it may not be worth the money and cost more than a replacement item or any likely future repairs.
  • Look out for counterfeit goods. Trading Standards Officers regularly find fake perfume, CDs, videos, DVDs, sports goods, clothing and other products. They may not be the bargain they appear to be. Many have been found to be dangerous, others poorly made and disappointing.
  • If buying using the internet always use a secure site which will protect your credit /debit card details. Take a screen print of your order.
  • If you do buy using your credit card and the purchase is over £100 then you will have added protection under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 should the company cease trading or the goods turn out to be faulty.
  • Look for the CE mark on toys. This shows that they have been manufactured to a certain safety standard. The Lion Mark is an added safeguard. Check the suitability of toys for the age of the child.  See our Toy Safety Leaflet (via the link on the right).
  • If buying videos, DVDs and computer games for children check the age certificate is appropriate for the recipient of the gift.
