Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) are special places where local people have the opportunity to experience or simply enjoy nature on their doorstep.
All Local Authorities have powers under Section 21 of the National Parks & Countryside Act 1949, to acquire, declare and manage LNR's. The process of designation involves formal consultation with Natural England, local communities and other interested parties.
LNRs are normally greater than two hectares in size and are managed for people and wildlife. This management ensures that the LNR will continue to make an important contribution to local wildlife for future generations to enjoy.
We are working with local volunteers from the community to develop 'Friends of' groups or working with to Parish Councils, to provide local input to managementof the site.
The County Council owns eight LNRs
