Code of Member Conduct

Code of Conduct

All Councillors are required to abide by a Code of Conduct adopted by the Council which sets out the standards of conduct expected of members of the Council. The Code of Conduct applies to all Councillors, to co-opted members of Committees and to the Independent members of the Standards Committee. The Code of Conduct forms part of the Council’s Constitution.  This can be accessed from the link on the right hand side.

Register of Interests

The Code of Conduct requires all Councillors and coopted members to register various interests such as membership of other organisations, the ownership of land, the receipt of gifts and hospitality, and significant financial interests. The Register of Interests is kept at Shire Hall and is open for inspection by members of the public by appointment during office hours. Protocol on Member/Officer Relations

The Nolan Committee’s Report on Standards of Conduct in Local Government recommended that every Council should adopt a formal protocol setting out guidance for appropriate relationships between Councillors and Officers. The Protocol adopted by the Council forms part of the Council’s Constitution.  This can be accessed from the link on the right.

Code of Development Control Practice

The Council has adopted a Code of Development Control Practice providing guidance to members and officers of the Council on the way in which planning applications are dealt with by the Council. A copy of the Code of Development Control Practice can be accessed from the link on the right hand side.

Standards Committee

In accordance with national legislation, the Council has established a Standards Committee to advise the Council on matters relating to member conduct and to consider complaints about member conduct. More information about the Council’s Standards Committee is available from the link on the left.
