The Coroner Service, based in Huntingdon, investigates any sudden or unexplained death to establish whether it was by natural causes. If this cannot be established, or for deaths under certain circumstances (such as in prison), an inquest is held to establish the identity of the deceased, when, where and how the death occurred.
