Our Overall Financial Strategy

The cornerstones of our financial strategy are:

  • to synchronise budget setting with the Council's Priorities, see the Integrated Plan link on the right hand side.
  • focusing on ‘doing the basics well’ and on what we have to do, rather than investing in new areas;
  • continuously improving what we do and how we do it, so that we can aim for ‘excellence’ and value for money, despite resource pressures;
  • making efficiency savings across all areas of the Council;
  • managing inflation down to Treasury guideline levels.

Council Tax
The County Council sets the largest single element of the final council tax paid by local taxpayers. However we do not collect or calculate individual council tax bills. For more information please see frequently asked questions on the right hand side.

Funding from Central Government
In 2008/09 Cambridgeshire received its lowest year on year real term increase from central government through the Revenue Support Grant of just 2% - this compares to 5.6% on average for all other county councils. Neighbouring Suffolk received 6.8% and Norfolk 8.7%. For more information see the link to the Government Funding page on the right hand side.
