Council tax

In 2013-14 around 46% of the money which we will spend on providing our services will come from Council Tax (this excludes schools).

This amounts to £226m of the total Council Tax collected by your billing authority (i.e. your district or city council) in the following proportions:

  • Cambridge £41m
  • East Cambridgeshire £30m
  • Fenland £29m
  • Huntingdonshire £63m
  • South Cambridgeshire £63m

This equates to £363 per head of population.

Who do you pay council tax to?

Your Council Tax is collected by one of the District or City Councils on behalf of all of the following organisations:

  • Cambridgeshire County Council
  • Your district or city council
  • Cambridgeshire Police & Crime Commissioner
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority
  • Your Parish Council (except for within the City).

Council tax rise for 2013-14

Following a public consultation we have set a 1.99% increase in our Council Tax for 2013-14 to protect vital front line services and avoid a multi-million pound funding gap in the future.

In the Council's budget survey, residents supported an increase in Council Tax to stave off the worst impacts of cuts.

By raising Council Tax and not taking the one-off Council Tax Freeze Grant offered by Government for 2013-14 we will invest extra money in front line services and also avoid the need for sharp increases in Council Tax precepts in subsequent years when Government funding would not be available.

We anticipate that the Council will continue to have one of the lowest rates in the country.
