The Service has two main functions. It processes student support applications on behalf of DfES. Linked with this an information service is provided through visiting schools and giving presentations to pupils and their parents concerning the higher education application process and the financial support available to students (fees and loan support).

The Service also provides the Education Welfare Benefits Service which deals with the administration of Free School Lunch Entitlements, Secondary School Clothing Vouchers and the Education Maintenance Allowance.
