No, school is not compulsory but education is.
The law says that parents are responsible for ensuring that their children receive efficient, full-time education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude and to any special educational needs which they might have.
Most parents choose to meet this responsibility by sending their children to school, but some choose to home educate their children.
If my child is on roll at a school does he/she have to go to school every day?
Yes. If your child is registered at a school he/she must by law attend that school regularly and punctually. Your child should only miss school if he/she is ill or unable to attend for some other unavoidable reason.
When does my child begin to be of compulsory school age? When does my child cease to be of compulsory school age?
From 1 September, 1 January or 1 April following his/her fifth birthday.
Starting school and school admissions
From the last Friday in June in the school year in which he/she is sixteen. Your child cannot leave school before this date.
Should my child be unwell and unable to go to school what should I do?
You should contact your child’s school as soon as possible on the first morning of any absence and explain why your child will not be attending that day. You should also send a note with your child when he/she returns to school.
Should my child refuse to attend school because of problems at home or at school where can I get help?
In these circumstances an Education Welfare Officer attached to your child's school will support and advise, but you remain legally responsible for your child's attendance.
