Information and resources to support early years and childcare providers in their policy and practice for child protection and safeguarding.
The welfare requirements for registered childcare (DCSF, 2007) state that:
'All practitioners should have an up-to-date understanding of safeguarding children issues and be able to implement the safeguarding children policy and procedure appropriately. Policies should be in line with Local Safeguarding Children Board local guidance and procedures.’
'The effectiveness of safeguarding' is a key element in the inspection of registered childcare by the regulator, Ofsted.
The document downloads and web links on this page signpost providers to key information on child protection and safeguarding. This includes guidance on how to handle allegations of abuse made against childcare providers.
Designated person
The welfare requirements for registered childcare further state that:
‘in group provision, a practitioner must be designated to take lead responsibility for safeguarding children within the setting, attend a child protection training course, and to liaise with local authority children’s services agencies as appropriate.’
It is also a requirement of the Cambridgeshire Local Agreement for Childcare Providers for all settings to have a designated person for child protection.
