Teaching primary school children to use their library effectively is essential if pupils are to become confident and independent learners.
SLS has produced the Step into Library Skills (SILS) packs to support teachers and teaching assistants working to develop children’s information literacy skills in their school library.
The SILS resource packs build on the information skills that children have learned from the literacy strand of the Primary National Strategy and use these skills in the school library to develop their independent research and learning.
There are two sets of SILS packs - First Steps with separate year packs for use by Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and Next Steps with year packs for Year 3, Year 4 and a combined pack for Years 5/6. Each year pack includes Pupil Workbooks (not Reception stage), Teaching Plans and teaching aids – printed as booklets and as files on CD Rom – from which copies may be made.
Use the links on the right to view sample extracts from the SILS Teachers Plan and Pupils Workbook, or to see a SILS Information Sheet that you can print out for more details.
