In the early years
The Visual Impairment Service recognises the importance of early identification, assessment and appropriate intervention for pre-school children.
We aim to help parents by:
- explaining medical information (e.g. diagnosis)
- assessing and monitoring vision and identifying related needs
- recommending activities and loaning toys which can help develop skills
- putting them in touch with support groups, voluntary agencies and other parents of children with visual impairments
- providing training for staff in the child’s pre-school/nursery placement
- working with other professionals to ensure a co-ordinated response to the needs of the family as a whole.
