Local authorities have statutory and non-statutory responsibilities in relation to nature conservation. Through our decisions and actions we have a pivotal role in safeguarding and enhancing biodiversity, otherwise known as the wealth of wildlife around us.
Biodiversity is crucial to our 'quality of life'. There is widespread recognition that biodiversity is a cross cutting issue for local government with strong links to other sustainable development issues. Biodiversity conservation is therefore a relevant issue that should be integrated into the delivery of services.
Staff within the Environment Policy and Projects Service work with colleagues and partners to protect and enhance Cambridgeshire’s landscape and biodiversity, and to secure and manage green infrastructure for community use.
Our work includes
- Advising other council departments on our statutory responsibilities in relation to nature conservation to ensure compliance.
- Commenting on strategic development proposals and advising on the implementation of nature conservation policies in development control work.
- Advising and assisting other council departments on the management of local authority owned land.
- Providing information and advice to other land managers and owners either directly or in partnership with other organisations.
- Directly managing a small number of Local Nature Reserves and encouraging local community participation and involvement.
- Working to provide greenspaces for existing and new communities.
- Actively participating in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Biodiversity Partnership.
- Supporting the development of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Biological Records Centre.
- A key partner in delivering The Green Infrastructure Strategy for the Cambridge Sub-region.
