The County Council works with a wide range of partners and the public to improve countryside and urban areas for both wildlife and people. Through our work we ensure the biodiversity of Cambridgeshire is protected and enhanced.
Council Policies
The Council is developing a Climate Change and Environment Strategy that contains actions for biodiversity and encourages environmentally friendly practices across departments.
County Wildlife Sites
Ensuring that these wildlife sites are protected and managed appropriately makes a major contribution to achieving the targets within the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Biodiversity Action Plan. The Council is a lead partner in developing the CWS Partnership working towards this goal.
Biodiversity Action Plans
Cambridgeshire has a wonderful diversity of habitats and species, but still has less wildlife per hectare than most counties in the UK. It is therefore vital that the few surviving areas of semi-natural wildlife habitat are conserved and enhanced. The County Council is an active member of the Biodiversity Partnership for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough helping to implement the action plans through its activities.
Biological Records Centre
The Council is supporting the development of the Records Centre and uses the information gathered to help inform decision making processes.
Land owned by the County Council
There are many opportunities to enhance biodiversity on the land that we own. Some of the land in our ownership has already been identified for its wildlife value and our management is aimed at promoting and enhancing that value for wildlife and for people to enjoy.
Elsewhere, we pursue opportunities for sympathetic management that encourages wildlife. Examples of our work include:
- A chalk downland restoration project along Devil's Dyke Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
- Management of SSSIs and County Wildlife Sites to achieve or retain them in a favourable condition.
- Implementing specific management regimes for Protected Road Verges
- Involving local communities in the management of Local Nature Reserves for wildlife
- Incorporation of biodiversity measures at Park and Ride Sites
- Environmental measures on the County Farms Estate
