Below are some of the activities which are progressed by the Cambridgeshire Orchards Group.
The Orchards BAP group meets quarterly in Ely to progress delivery of the Orchards BAP.
The years 2006 to 2008 are being used for a Phase 2 survey to assess the biodiversity value of all identified traditional orchards in Cambridgeshire. This work is building on the Phase 1 survey carried out in 2005 (see Publications). Preliminary results of the Phase 2 survey from May 2008 can be found on the PowerPoint presenation on the right (Publication).
A selection of orchards will be surveyed in a Phase 3 survey when specialists will be looking at specific biodiversity value, e.g. mosses, fungi or invertebrates.
The orchard BAP group is also communicating the value of traditional orchards to planners to better protect the remaining orchard resource and to encourage new plantings. To promote this within Local Authorities a guidance leaflet was produced in August 2007 (see Publications on the right).
The webbased "Cambridgeshire Orchard Fruit Guide" encourages members of the public to find out where to get locally grown orchard fruit, either at farmers' markets, roadside stalls, farmshops or by joining community orchard projects (see link on right hand side). Please check it out and email us additional information.
The Biodiversity Partnership Coordinator gave a presentation at a national orchard seminar in May 2007 on the activities of the Cambridgeshire Orchard Group, "Implementing our traditional Orchard Habitat Action Plan" - see Publications on the right.
