NERC Biodiversity Duty

The Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act came into force on 1 October 2006 and introduced a Duty for Local Authorities to have regard to the conservation of biodiversity in exercising all of their functions.

The Biodiversity Partnership explored with representatives from Local Authorities how they can "Think Biodiversity..." and fulfil their Biodiversity Duty in a workshop on 30 October

The presentations on the right hand side give an overview of the Biodiversity Duty and show several good practice examples, how county and district authorities are considering biodiversity at the moment. 6 workshop groups discussed the links between service areas and biodiversity, looked at current action and identified further action that can be taken to benefit biodiversity. The write-up of the workshops can also be found on the right hand side.
