50 Year Vision Map

The Cambridgeshire 50 year Wildlife Vision map produced by the county's Biodiversity Partnership shows a dramatic change in the county's landscape with new fens and large areas of woodland and grassland. It has been drawn up by the Partnership to show how they hope the county will look in 2050 as regards its green and wet spaces. This almost unrecognisable Cambridgeshire is greener, wilder and, in places, has returned to fenland last seen before the drainage schemes of the 1500s.

This groundbreaking and bold vision is the first of its kind in Britain and may even be the first produced for any region in Europe.

The map aims to show what members of the biodiversity partnership in the county are working towards and has had input from groups such as The Wildlife Trust and English Nature. And, crucially, it is also an appeal to people to get involved and make it happen perhaps through supporting a local conservation organisation or encouraging biodiversity in gardens, school grounds or workplaces.

Cambridgeshire County Council's Lead Member for Environment and Transport Shona Johnstone said: "This map is our vision of what we want Cambridgeshire to be like in 50 years - for our children and for our children's children. I want to see a county with new fenland, with more trees and with large areas of grassland. I want to create a county that enhances the well being of its inhabitants - both people and wildlife. We hope that the Vision Map will inspire people to do their bit to conserve and enhance our green heritage."
