Bullocks Haste

The ‘lumps and bumps’ in the fields at Bullocks Haste, to the north of Cottenham, are believed to be the remains of a significant Romano-British settlement, thought to have been a major port and possibly an administrative and religious centre. The course of the Car Dyke also passes through this site.

At the time of writing, there is no public access to the fields, though access may be agreed in the future. Please do not trespass onto the site. The site can, however, be viewed both from Setchell’s Drove, a public highway to the north, or from the public footpath on the north side of Cottenham Lode to the south. A strong imagination is, perhaps, needed to see the history in this lumpy field, though the oblique light of a low sun in the morning or evening will help.

Although some distance from the Northstowe site, Bullocks Haste can be reached by bicycle. Care should be taken on the rough fen roads north of Cottenham, which although nominally surfaced, show signs of ‘heave’ in the peaty soil. Cottenham can be reached by bus. There are no facilities at Bullocks Haste.

Other nearby attractions include Cottenham Lode and the Car Dyke. Other dead-end droves lead to the surprisingly remote spaces to the south of the river Great Ouse.
