While byways are 'open to all traffic', they are generally maintained principally for walkers and riders. In some places and at some times, recreational motor vehicle use can damage the surface which adversely affects access by other users. While we recognise that this can be a sensitive issue, it may then be necessary to consider the use of a temporary or permanent Traffic Regulation Order, often with barriers to control access.
Before such measures are taken, we may try a 'voluntary restraint', whereby notices are displayed asking motor vehicles not to use the route, generally while the route recovers, during sensitive periods or after surface improvements or repairs. Where such voluntary restraints are successful, then it may be possible to avoid more severe access restrictions in the future.
We will try to list routes where voluntary restraints are currently in place on this page.
- Ely Byway 39 (St Johns Road) - until 30th May 2012 following improvement works.
- Glatton Byway 6 following improvement works.
Witchford Byway 7 and Wilburton Byway 14, previously subject to voluntary restraints, are now temporarily closed by Order (see Temporary Closures page).
