Cambridgeshire County Council is the designated registration authority under the Commons Registration Act 1965 and Commons Act 2006 for lands within the present administrative county. The District Councils have the power (but not a duty) to deal with most aspects of village greens and open space management.
Under the 1965 Act, all existing commons and town or village greens had to be registered. The commons registers, which also include subsequent registrations, are maintained by the registration authority and contain information about the land, the owner and any rights of common.
The Asset Information Team undertakes the following statutory duties for the County Council:
- Maintaining the registers of common land and town and village greens
- Processing applications to register new land
- Processing applications to amend the registers
Please note that we can only provide you with details of land that was registered under the 1965 Act. We do not have jurisdiction over open spaces not registered under the Act, nor do we arbitrate in cases of dispute in relation to registered land.
We cover all of Cambridgeshire, but not the Peterborough City Council area. For Peterborough commons searches, please contact Peterborough City Council through the link in the right hand menu
