The Rights of Way Team has a responsibility to maintain public access to the countryside via Public Rights of Way.
Maintenance responsibilities for Public Rights of Way are split between the land manager and the Highway Authority. For example, a land manager has a duty to cut back overhanging vegetation, but the Highway Authority has a duty to cut the grass.
Given limited and diminishing resources available, issues have to be prioritised. The '5-day inspection' regime for roads does not apply to rights of way.
Where possible, for example when externally funded, the County Council also undertakes improvements on paths, such as improving accessibility or signing destinations and distances.
