The Cambridgeshire Green Vision is an exciting 20-year plan to improve quality of life for residents of the county both now and in the future. It’s about enhancing the environment for both people and wildlife.
More areas of the countryside will be available to walk, ride and cycle in. There will be an increase in the number of country parks, and visitor attractions will be improved and expanded. Wildlife will benefit from increases in areas of wetland, fen, woodland and grassland and improvements to rivers and farmland.
The aim of the Green Vision is to highlight the importance of the natural environment to Cambridgeshire. This will be achieved through creating a widespread network of green corridors and sites that:
- enhance the diversity of landscape character
- connect and enrich biodiversity habitats and
- extend access and recreation opportunities
Over the next 20 years the population of the county is expected to grow by 130,000 people. In addition to homes and jobs, these people will also need places to relax and enjoy the outdoors, and places where they can feel part of a local community.
A new Green Infrastructure Strategy
Back in 2006 Cambridgeshire Horizons and partners, including Cambridgeshire County Council, launched the original Green Infrastructure Strategy covering the Cambridge Sub-region. Now, almost four years later, the strategy is being reviewed. This time it will cover the whole of Cambridgeshire.
Cambridgeshire Horizons are keen to know your thoughts on the updated Green Infrastructure Strategy. It covers a range of outdoor places and spaces including rivers and watercourses, country parks, woodlands, hedgerows, public rights of way and much, much more. You can find out more about the new revised Strategy and the consultation events that are taking place across the county by going to the Cambridgeshire Horizons website (link on the right).
