Planning application decisions

Process

Planning applications are considered against current planning policy as set out in the Development Plan and Government Guidance. The Development Plan consists of the County Structure Plan, Local Plans, Local Development Frameworks. Planning legislation requires applications to be determined in accordance with the Development Plan unless there are good planning reasons not to do so. Also other relevant factors, known as 'material considerations', must be examined.

Consultations are undertaken with district councils, parish councils, local residents and government agencies such as the Environment Agency. Neighbouring landowners are informed about proposals that may affect them.

Development Control Committee meetings are held every month. Upcoming meeting dates can be found by following the link on the right hand side. Only elected members of the Development Control Committee are allowed to vote on an application. The Committee is guided in making its decisions by advice from Planning Officers. Copies of Committee Reports can be found by following the link on the right hand side. They are usually published 6 working days before the date of the meeting.

Non-contentious applications that are in accordance with planning policy are decided by officers under delegated powers in consultation with the Chairman of the Development Control Committee.
