The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Minerals and Waste Core Strategy and Proposals Map C: Mineral Safeguarding Areas were adopted by Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council on 19 July 2011.
The Minerals and Waste Core Strategy sets the framework for all minerals and waste developments until 2026. It sets out policies to guide mineral and waste management development, and will: ensure a steady supply of minerals (construction materials e.g. sand and gravel) to supply the growth that is planned for the area.
- ensure a steady supply of minerals (construction materials e.g. sand and gravel) to supply the growth that is planned for the area.
- enable us to have new modern waste management facilities, to manage our waste in a much better way than landfill.
It will be used by developers when putting forward proposals and by Councils when considering planning applications. The Core Strategy makes strategic allocations for long term mineral and waste management development at Block Fen / Langwood Fen, near Mepal. It also designates an Area of Search for a replacement (energy from waste) clinical waste management facility at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.
Mineral Safeguarding Areas are designated through Proposal Map C. This will ensure that consultation takes place between the County Council as Mineral Planning Authority and district / city councils when development is proposed on mineral bearing land. The aim is to avoid the County’s finite mineral resource being unknowingly or unnecessarily sterilised.
