Who is responsible?
Under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 anybody wishing to keep or use radioactive materials has to register with the Environment Agency; the accumulation or disposal of radioactive waste also requires authorisation from the Environment Agency.
Why do we have radioactive substances?
Radioactive substances are used in many ways - the generation of electricity, medical diagnosis and treatment, scientific research and specialised industrial applications. Most operations involving the use of radioactive material result, directly or indirectly, in the generation of radioactive wastes in solid, liquid or gaseous form and these need to be controlled.
Where can I find out more information?
The Environment Agency is required to keep and make publicly available copies of all applications, authorisations and registrations and details of other relevant information. Local authorities are also required to make publicly available copies of registrations and authorisations.
If you would like to view the radioactive substances public register please contact the Environment Agency, your district Environment Health department or the Environment Policy and Projects Service at the County Council.
