Car-sharing in Cambridgeshire: One in a car - why not two, three or four?
According to a recent RAC Report, overall levels of car traffic on the road have increased tenfold since 1955. In 1999/2001, 60% of cars on British roads had only one occupant and for commuting and business use the rate was 84%. (Source: National Travel Survey 2003).
What is Car-sharing?
Car sharing schemes aim to encourage 2 or more people travelling to the same place to share a vehicle.
Car sharing allows people to still enjoy the convenience of travelling by car (particularly those in rural areas where alternative transport options are limited), but at the same time, saves you money and reduces the number of cars on the road.
Why Car-share?
Travelling around the UK has significant negative impacts on the environment. Most of these stem from motor vehicles and include congestion, air pollution, habitat destruction through road building and noise.
Cambridgeshire is a diverse county comprised of both built up urban settlements and sparser rural areas. As a result, a variety of travel options must be explored.
Travelling by car may be the only viable option in some areas where options that work in, for example, city centres, are not practical. If this is the case there are still ways to minimise the environmental impact by simply car sharing.
