With 1 in 5 cars on the road at 8.50am engaged in the “school run”, reducing dependence on the car for the school journey has become a key issue. Research has shown that the school run contributes to increased levels of congestion and pollution, and an increase in childhood obesity through reduced physical activity.
In September 2003 the Government established an initiative to examine home to school transport, known as the "Travelling to School Initiative".
The primary objectives of the "Travelling to School Initiative" (TTSI) are to improve road safety for children and reduce dependence on the car by promoting walking, cycling and public transport as more responsible, accessible and desirable alternatives for the home to school journey.
Cambridgeshire County Council is committed to helping all schools across the county to complete a government approved School Travel Plan (STP).
Many schools and sixth form colleges in Cambridgeshire have written School Travel Plans and are implementing the actions and objectives they identified. Many more are in the process of developing a travel plan.
