Disposal of Oil and Oil Tanks
Extras

Waste oil and oil tanks are considered to be hazardous waste, whether oil from home, cooking or engine.

The tanks are from oil central heating systems in older houses. They will only usually need disposing of when the system is replaced with an alternative energy source such as gas.

What should I do with my oil tank?

Ensure that any oil remaining in the tank is drained and disposed of through a licensed contractor.

1. District Councils
Your District/City Council may be able to provide a collection service depending on the size of your oil tank and the vehicles they have available.

Please contact your District/City Council for more details.

2. Private contractors
You will need to contact the scrap merchant or private contractor directly to find out if they deal with this kind of waste.  Make sure that the company is licensed to accept your tank.

Recycling Centres will NOT accept central heating oil tanks. They are not counted as normal Household Waste.

What should I do with my oil?
When disposing of oil, special procedures need to be followed.

Engine Oil
If your engine oil is from your household you will be able to dispose of it at your local Recycling Centre.

For large amounts and oil from a Business please see the link on the right.
