Cambridgeshire is currently recycling more waste than it is sent to landfill sites – 51% of our rubbish was recycled from April to June this year!
However, with landfill space running out, an increasing population and more stringent targets and legislation, we can’t rest on our laurels.
Waste prevention is the way forward to reduce the piles of waste we produce every year. By preventing waste entering our homes, we make a more efficient use of resources and reduce the environmental impacts associated with transport of waste.
These are a few tips to prevent waste:
- Buy loose goods to avoid packaging
- Buy reusable items, such as rechargeable batteries and electric razors.
- Take reusable bags with you to carry your shopping
- Donate unwanted items in good condition to charity shops and community groups
- Buy from charity shops and community groups – they are full of unique pieces!
- Choose cloth nappies over disposable ones.
- Stop junk mail – call 0845 7034599 to register with the Mail Preference Service
- Buy goods made from recycled materials
