Why did you apply to this scheme?
I applied to Cambridgeshire County Council as the location was ideal for me. Upon looking into the scheme further I discovered that I would have the opportunity to gain an insight into many different areas of the financial aspects of the council, which I think is fairly unique.
I applied to the public sector as it is possible to see the impacts of financial decisions first hand. Also the variety of work available meant I was able to train in several areas of accountancy, so I will be able to make an informed decision later in my career.
What experience have you gained on the scheme?
I am currently half way through my first placement in Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS). From my first day, I have been given a lot of responsibility, being a financial advisor to several budget holders across many services, as well as assisting with analysis of data such as debt figures and prompt payment. I have been given many opportunities to expand this placement and my own working experiences. Since the start of this placement I have been able to develop an understanding of both the service and corporate sides of CYPS and how they interlink.
Initially I found working full time and studying quite difficult to manage in terms of time. However, I have been given a lot of support through my placement and I am already using some of the college material at work.
What is your current role?
In my current placement I am responsible for analysing debt figures on a weekly basis and attending a monthly debt focus meeting to discuss service position. I also analyse prompt payment figures, and have recently become more involved in collating month end figures for publication. I also support several budget holders, holding monthly meetings to discuss income and expenditure, year-end forecasts and identify and solve any anomalies or queries.
One of the best parts of my placement is its diversity - no two days are the same. I really enjoy working with budget holders, as it enables me to see the impacts of finance and has helped to expand my network within the council.
How do you see your future development?
I plan to finish CIPFA during 2015, and then apply for and hopefully be successful in gaining a managerial position here at the council. There is a wide variety of opportunities for newly qualified accountants, and I aim to work hard to make the most of all those presented to me.
What are the most important skills/strengths you need to be successful on the scheme?
If you are looking for a scheme which is full of variety, responsibility, and is challenging but well supported – this scheme could be perfect! To be successful I think you need to be willing to listen and learn, but confident enough to take the responsibilities and opportunities presented to you.
All of the placements will require you to be able to communicate your ideas, and work in teams with a variety of people with different skills. Being confident in using computers and Excel, in particular, will be advantageous. Time management is vital in juggling the demands of working and studying, and you must be willing to work hard to succeed.
