The Historic Towns of Cambridgeshire: An Extensive Urban Survey
The Extensive Urban Survey is an ongoing project to assess the archaeology of the historic towns of Cambridgeshire. Each Survey draws on documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence. To date, 29 urban centres have been reported on.
The majority of the archaeological work currently undertaken in Cambridgeshire takes place in an urban context. In partnership with English Heritage, the Extensive Urban Survey project aims to ensure that the best information is available early in the development process and that the new information generated is fed back into the archaeological record.
The urban centres which have been studied are distributed throughout the districts of South Cambridgeshire, East Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon and Fenland. Cambridge itself has been the subject of a separate study. To date, the EUS project has produced detailed assessments of the archaeology and history of 29 of the county’s towns.
Draft copies of these reports can be consulted by arrangement with the Cambridgeshire Historic Environment Record. Clicking on the district links on the left-hand side of this page will take you to pages containing short summaries of these reports’ findings.
