Services provided by the CHER
At the Cambridgeshire Historic Environment Record, we aim to offer services to meet the various and differing needs of all our users.
Academics, Students & Researchers
With our fully searchable database we can provide you with chronological and thematic searches. Our primary records are supported by further references, many of which we hold in our reference library.
Local Studies
Our records are searchable by location, so we can provide you with information about archaeology in your local area. We can also provide overviews or supporting information to Parish Councils for the production of Village Plans.
Amateur Archaeologists
We provide you with information for local research and give you access to a network of contacts relating to archaeology in Cambridgeshire. We can also provide advice for local groups wishing to undertake fieldwork in the county.
Finds Identification and Metal Detecting
We are always interested to hear of new archaeological discoveries in the county. The Finds Liaison Officer can help with identification and recording. In turn we ask that a record be made of your discovery, for the benefit of future researchers and enthusiasts.
Developers & Commercial Consultants †
We can provide information at a variety of levels for use in archaeological assessments. We also offer a scoping service for proposed development areas. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Contracting Organisations †
The information held on the CHER is central to the understanding of a site, whether for a desk-based assessment or as background information for a piece of fieldwork. All fieldwork reports are submitted to the CHER on completion of the project, and we ensure that the results of these are made accessible.
Museums
CHER can support your work in a variety of ways. We can provide talks and presentations on many aspects of archaeology, and help with organising finds identification events. Objects from the County Archaeological Store can be borrowed for exhibitions in Cambridgeshire museums. We also have access to the services of an antiquities conservator.
Schools
We can provide day or week-long work placements for Cambridgeshire students.
† Please note that we charge for some of these services, but as a guideline we only apply charges in a commercial situation or when there is a significant material cost to ourselves. For more information please refer to the CHER User Guidance and Pricing document.
