Information held at the CHER

A wide range of information relating to the historic and archaeological environment is held at the Cambridgeshire Historic Environment Record.  This includes:

  • Standing monuments and earthworks, such as the remains of castles and dykes.
  • Chance finds, such as scatters of pottery or finds from metal-detecting.
  • Details of excavations, ranging from those in the 19th century to the present day.
  • Information gained from field surveys, such as artefact scatters and historic landscape features.
  • Cropmarks identified from aerial photographs, which can indicate the presence of buried ditches or structures.
  • Documentary evidence, such as windmills and water pumps depicted on historic maps.

We also hold additional information relating to:

  • The Cambridge Urban Archaeological Database (UAD), a database of archaeological remains within the historic core of Cambridge;
  • Scheduled Ancient Monuments, archaeological sites of national importance that are afforded statutory protection; and
  • Listed buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

Our reference library contains relevant publications and unpublished material, which are available for consultation by appointment. These include:

  • Over 1500 unpublished field work reports;
  • Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society;
  • RCHME surveys of Cambridgeshire and the former Huntingdonshire;
  • Victoria County Histories of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire; and
  • East Anglian Archaeology publications, including Fenland Survey.

We also have a number of publications for sale.
