History of the Iron Age Farm Project
The project began in 1994. Its aim was to show what life was like at the time of the Roman invasion 2000 years ago but also to give the opportunity for hands on experience of the past. The site started with the construction of a single Iron Age roundhouse and this developed into an Iron Age and Romano-British farmstead, including several roundhouses, grain stores, animal pens, herb garden, cooking hearth, a bread oven and pottery kilns.
Since 1996 regular public open days and schools activity weeks have been held attracting large numbers of visitors. The project was both sustained and enhanced in 2003 with the award of a Heritage Lottery Grant which helped to further develop the project and involve more people in the activities.
