Activities List


• Activity 1 (2 large boxes) £ 15 (per week) An introduction to archaeology and the archaeological timeline: archaeological time periods for the whole class or as a group activity, using archaeological equipment and allowing pupils to handle replica and original artefacts.

• Activity 2 (3 large boxes, 1 small box) £20 Pottery through the ages: pottery styles through time including a group activity to reconstruct replica pots.

• Activity 3 (2 large boxes) £10 Making and designing pottery from the past: practical session of making and decorating thumb-and-coil pots. Methods of firing pots and pottery styles from different periods are discussed (please note that clay is not provided).

• Activity 4 (1 large box, 1 small box, plus up to 10 small ‘dig’ boxes) £20 Excavating the past and present: an introduction to archaeological techniques where pupils learn about decomposition, recycling and use trowels to excavate in ‘soil’ (recycled granulated rubber) for a range of original and replica artefacts.

• Activity 5 (1 large box) £10 Comparing Roman and modern kitchens: group activity with the opportunity for class discussion, pupils use  photographs and real artefacts to look at the differences between a Roman and modern kitchen.

• Activity 6 (3 large boxes) £20 Identifying Roman kitchen and table artefacts: introduction to Roman artefacts, followed by group activity to identify replicas artefacts. This session also provides an opportunity for group/class discussion.

• Activity 7 (1 large box) £10 Stocking your kitchen through time: looking at the range of food eaten by humans during different time periods. Using a laminated ‘plate’ for each time period, pupils work out whether food items (laminated picture cards) were foraged, hunted, farmed, processed or imported.

• Activity 8 (4 large boxes) £20 Grave goods and decomposition: introduction to decomposition and recycling of materials. Pupils working in groups are asked to compare Roman and modern materials and how they decompose differently, including artefacts found in burials. Discussions can also consider recycling in the past compared with today. Additional activities for this session include the ‘Recycling Ludo’ game.
