Planning advice

The UK Government has now published the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) which replaces Planning Policy Statement 5 (PPS5) and the previous Planning Policy Guidance Notes 15 and 16. The NPPF is supported by a commentary prepared by English Heritage. Links to the NPPF and English Heritage’s documentation can be found in the external links column.

In line with this government policy the Historic Environment Team (HET) provides archaeological advice relating to the planning process to the Local and Mineral Planning Authorities, archaeological organisations, developers and their agents as well as to the general public.

Archaeological investigation can be time-consuming and, in accordance with the guidance contained in the NPPF, the expenses involved are borne by the developer. We strongly recommend that developers seek early advice from this office about potential impacts of development proposals. Early consultation with the Historic Environment Team ensures that any necessary archaeological work will not create unexpected problems.

More detailed guidance can be downloaded from this page, including a flow chart which indicates the Development Management process.
